Meet the Team: Sam Miller (she/her)
This week in our ‘Meet The Team’ series, we’re spotlighting our Senior Business Analyst, Sam Miller.

A New Jersey native, marathon trainee, and a wiz at story telling through numbers — Sam embodies what it means to be a true team player.
What’s your coffee order?
I don’t actually drink coffee. So whenever I treat myself, I order a lemon ginger tea.
What’s your pump up song?
I live for Lizzo. She’s so awesome. Her new song ‘Rumors’ does not miss. It’s the most energizing song and she’s the most positive person — I just love it.
What makes you, you?
I’m originally from NJ, a true Jersey girl, but went to school in the south and have lived in Manhattan ever since. I’ve lived in a few different places, but no matter what city I live in, I love to get to know the neighborhoods by running, it really is the best way to learn. I’m also training for the NYC Marathon, so I’ve covered a lot of ground across the city, seen a ton of people, new restaurants and new neighborhoods.
Even though I’ve lived here for a while, I’ve learned so much about New York that I didn’t know before. I think it’s safe to say that running is probably my superpower. Just last weekend I ran 18 miles. It took a very long time and was very tiring, but I felt amazing afterwards. When I was finished I actually went to my favorite bakery and got a slice of cake. I will run for cake, that’s for sure.
What makes you feel at home at Alfred?
When I started at Alfred, I was actually a remote employee, so it was at first intimidating to not know everyone or have met anyone in real life. That quickly changed. Right away, I learned that everyone is super accessible, and that the accessibility made me feel at home really quickly. Between the level of accessibility and collaboration, it was clear that Alfred was unique from any other place I’ve worked at or experienced. Even though I only met everyone virtually, it was an immediate feeling of home.
What are your 3 deserted island items?
My dog Ruby, my iPad and Diet Coke.
What does community mean to you?
To me, community is all about bringing out the best in each other. A lot of the time I find that I don’t have everything in common with everyone, but those are the types of people who end up bringing out the most positive and good energy into my life. It’s so important to find the people that celebrate and support you even if you don’t have everything in common. It’s my favorite thing that I experience here at Alfred.
Something you learned during the pandemic?
During the pandemic, I learned to appreciate the little things. I gained so much perspective on what matters and what honestly brings joy to my life. I was with my family in NJ for most of the pandemic and it was like living with my family in high school all over again.
Every single day, my parents, my dog, my sister and I went on walks throughout the neighborhood, same time of day, everyday. We got very rigid with it to the point the neighbors noticed. And now even though I’m back in the city in my studio, I still go on a walk at the same time of day. Those little things just bring me so much joy.
